Argentina: Classic Northwest

Northwest Argentina is a land of dramatic contrasts. From lush Yungas forest to cactus-filled valleys, colorful desert landscapes, and windswept high-elevation Puna, this tour will try to capture the uniqueness of this region. Traveling from Tucumán to the Bolivian border, we will experience changes in scenery and elevation, including the Río Los Sosa Valley, Los Cardones National Park, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, and the high plateau around Abra Pampa.

These varied habitats support an equally impressive diversity of birds, including regional specialties such as Yellow-striped Brushfinch, Tucuman Mountain Finch, Red-tailed Comet, Tucuman Amazon, and Rufous-throated Dipper. Higher elevations bring chances for Andean Condor, Giant Hummingbird, three (!) species of flamingos, Giant Coot, and the unique Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, while lower elevations offer birds such as Tataupa Tinamou, Red-legged Seriema, Yellow-collared Macaw, Giant Antshrike and Golden-billed Saltator.

Along the way, we will also enjoy the distinctive cuisine of Northwest Argentina, including empanadas salteñas, locro, traditional asado, with opportunities to sample regional wines such as Malbec and Torrontés. This tour aims to offers a varied introduction to one of South America’s iconic birding regions.
