Southern California: Sea, Mountains & Desert

Warm weather, lots of sunshine, and tons of great birds. This is a trip that takes in the best of Southern California, from the Pacific Coast to the Imperial Valley. The many California specialties, including Island Scrub-Jay and California Condor, the numerous coastal species, and lots of spring migrant birds provide highlights.

Tanzania: The best of east Africa

Join us for the best birding in all of East Africa! We will seek out incredible birds, mammals, and scenery while on safari in some of the most iconic locations in Africa, including Ngorongoro Crater and the mighty Serengeti.

Our extension to the Usambara Mountains offers us an opportunity to find many montane specialties not seen on our main tour, including the utterly unique Spot-throat.

COlorado: The lekking Grouse Tour

April 3-14, 2028

On this action-packed tour, we visit the leks of Greater Prairie-Chicken, Lesser Prairie-Chicken, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Greater Sage Grouse, and Gunnison Sage Grouse. We also seek out displaying Dusky Grouse and visit the treeless realm of the White-tailed Ptarmigan.

Despite the chicken focus, this tour is jam-packed with other special birds, including migrant and resident waterfowl, numerous species of raptors, two species of longspurs, and a chance for all three species of rosy-finch! And let’s not forget the scenery and mammals!

A two-day extension sets out to look for the most recently described bird in North America, along with Flammulated Owl and other local breeding species. Can be joined as a stand-alone trip as well.

ALASKA: THE FINAL FRONTIER

Welcome to the last frontier of North American birding! The Great Land (Aleut translation of Alyeska) is like nowhere else in the United States both in terms of immensity and abundant wildlife. We will enjoy spectacular scenery and mammals, all while seeking out some of North America’s most-wanted birds.

Malaysia: THe best of borneo

Join us in the beautiful state of Sabah, where we will enjoy broadbills, babblers, hornbills, and more, all from excellent ecolodges. We will also seek out the enigmatic wildlife that calls the island home, including the “old man of the forest” the Bornean Orangutan.

This year, we are offering a pre-tour extension to Peninsular Malaysia, with a focus on the bird-rich montane forests above Kuala Lumpur.

Mexico: Veracruz RIver of Raptors

SEPTEMBER 19-29, 2028

Each year, millions of migrating birds use a narrow corridor along the coastal state of Veracruz to migrate south, including nearly the entire global population of Broad-winged Hawks, Swainson’s Hawks, Mississippi Kites, and Turkey Vultures. Anhingas, Wood Storks, Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, and many others also use this incredible migration corridor.

If migration wasn’t enough, we will also visit surrounding habitats for a nice suite of Mexican endemics and tropical species, including Red Warbler and Strickland’s Woodpecker.

New jersey: cape may migration madness

September 28 - October 2, 2028

Cape May is one of the world’s great bird migration hotspots with millions of birds following the eastern shoreline of the United States.

September and October are rocking months in Cape May, when the combination of warblers, sparrows, hawks, falcons, shorebirds, ducks, and seabirds makes for incredible birding and diverse experiences.

Incredible birding and mammals (including Jaguar!) at the end of the dry season in one of the world's great wetlands, plus endemic birds of the Cerrado.

Our Southeast Brazil pre-trip is designed to get the Brazil birding party started early. Most people’s first stop in Brazil will be São Paulo, so we based our pre-trip in the spectacular Atlantic Rainforest near São Paulo, right on your way to the Pantanal.

The Iguaçu Falls extension includes four nights to enjoy the falls and the area's birds, with a full day on both the Brazil and Argentina sides of the great falls, plus an additional day for birding.

Australia: Eastern Coast & Tasmania

Sydney Extension September 21-26, 2028

Join Red Hill Birding is headed Down Under! Our inaugural Aussie tour will focus on the East Coast, birding out of Cairns and Brisbane, where we will visit a wide variety of habitats from ancient rainforest, eucalyptus forest, rugged hills, coast, and the incomparable Great Barrier Reef. Our tour will seek out the birds that make Australia famous, including gaudy parrots and cockatoos, honeyeaters, bowerbirds, and an impressive collection of endemics. We will finish our tour in Tasmania, where we hope to find most of the island’s endemics, and will have a few pelagics to seek out a plethora of petrels and albatrosses.

Before the main tour begins, joins us for a short pre-tour out of Sydney to explore the diverse habitats around Southeastern Australia, including a few birds not found on the main tour.

Bhutan: Birding Under Buddha’s Gaze + Thailand Extension

Birding in the Himalayas during the most beautiful time of year, with a healthy dose of Bhutanese culture. Unlike most Bhutan birding tours, we stay in hotels the whole trip.

For the extension, we will spend a few days in and around the wonderful Kaeng Krachan National Park, where we should see many lowland rainforest birds that we won’t see in Bhutan. We’ll also bird in the critically important coastal wetland habitat nearby, where we will look for Spoon-billed Sandpiper among 20+ species of shorebirds

Colombia: Santa Marta & Guajira Peninsula

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: ENDEMIC JEWELS OF HISPANIOLA

November 30 - December 8, 2028

The Dominican Republic is a must-stop on the Caribbean birding circuit, with the possibility of encountering 30 endemic species. We will be visiting all the crucial habitats to see the endemics on the island, some of which are now scarce and endangered. This trip can be combined with our tour of Jamaica.

JAMAICA: ISLAND ENDEMICS & CARIBBEAN SPECIALTIES

Red Hill Birding - Island style! With 28 endemic bird species and many more endemic subspecies, Jamaica is an important destination in the Caribbean for endemics and all-around great Caribbean birding. We are only staying at two locations on this easy tour of the northeastern portion of the island. This trip can be combined with our tour of the Dominican Republic.
