Southern Arizona: The desert in winter

Southeast Arizona is one of the US’s top birding destinations. Well known in late summer for monsoon season, birding the mountains and surrounding deserts and grasslands in winter is both a welcome break from from Arizona’s summer heat and the Midwest winter’s grip. Plus it’s home to incredible resident and wintering birds!

The mountain forests, desert scrub, and riparian zones are alive and teeming with wintering raptors, sparrows, ducks, and massive flocks of Sandhill Cranes. We will be on the lookout for wintering longspurs, sparrows, and other migrants, along with residents like Bridled Titmouse, Elegant Trogon, and many others. And there’s always the possibility that a Rufous-backed Robin or other rarity will be around, too.

Itineraries will be updated with plenty of time before the next departure. Our itineraries usually show minimal changes between years, but some substantive updates can occur as birding access and information evolves. For any specific questions regarding these trips, please contact us.
