Malaysia: Best of Borneo
The third largest island in the world, Borneo is a bucket-list destination for the birder and naturalist, and is one of the most biodiverse locations in the world! Over 50 endemics can be found across the island’s ancient dipterocarp forest, pristine riverine forest, montane cloud forest and mangroves. Some of the most compelling bird families are present at peak diversity including pittas, hornbills, broadbills, babblers, trogons and kingfishers. And let’s not forget the other wildlife that makes this area famous! We will make a concerted effort to find the enigmatic wildlife that calls Borneo home, including “the old man of the forest”, the Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, Horsfeld’s Tarsier, and more!
This classic tour will have us spending three nights at most locations so we can fully appreciate each biogeographic region and have the best chance at seeing our target species.
Our pre-tour extension to Peninsular Malaysia, with a focus on the bird-rich montane forests above Kuala Lumpur, will give us time to adjust to the time change while seeing some incredible birds, many of which are endemic to the peninsula.
Itineraries will be updated with plenty of time before the next departure. Our itineraries usually show minimal changes between years, but some substantive updates can occur as birding access and information evolves. For any specific questions regarding these trips, please contact us.
