Morocco: Birding the magnificent Maghreb
Morocco is ancient in the truest sense of the word. Inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic, Morocco has long been a place of trade, movement, and stark beauty. Today, this Muslim nation still bears cultural marks and influences from the Mediterranean, France, and Spain. The Berbers, the indigenous people of Morocco and North Africa who predate the Arab arrival, add another crucial layer to this diverse country, including many of their fine cuisines.
This richness extends to Morocco's natural world, and December is a rewarding time to be birding in the country. The country offers a diverse mix of resident endemics and wintering visitors, and our tour of Morocco will search for birds like Moussier's Redstart, Barbary Partridge, Levaillant’s Woodpecker, and African Blue Tit. Desert biomes are home to Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Desert Wheatear, and Trumpeter Finch. At the same time, the Atlantic coast, particularly Souss Massa National Park, can hold massive numbers of waders and waterfowl, along with the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis.
Itineraries will be updated with plenty of time before the next departure. Our itineraries usually show minimal changes between years, but some substantive updates can occur as birding access and information evolves. For any specific questions regarding these trips, please contact us.
